For the Poima people in Colombia, Kachalú means 'new hope'. Hope for a promising future for their children, starting with education at the Delicias school that was built with money from the Kachalú project. Together with MVO Nederland, Blanche Dael is working on a True Cost Accounting project in Colombia. In cooperation with the Colombian Coffee Federation and two coffee farmers in Cauca and Huila, we are trying to map out the actual costs of sustainable coffee production in Colombia. That is the sum of 1. a fair income for the farmer, 2. the costs of low-CO2 production, 3. the prevention of water pollution, 4. the prevention of land degradation and 5. the costs of maintaining a biodiverse ecosystem. If we know these costs, we also know what a kilo of coffee costs, and we can work with the farmer to make investments that enable sustainable coffee production and a fair price.
